HPV (short for the human papilloma virus), is the most commond STD in the world bar none. Millions of people are infected. Although practicing safe sex among partners will help to reduce the spread of infection. HPV is not like other sexually transmitted diseases and can be spread just through skin contact alone, without intercourse.
Obviously, the more partners you have had, the greater the chance of contracting it at sometime in your life but even if you are careful you could still be unlucky.
There are over 100 different identified strains of hpv, of which somewhere in the region of 40 can lead to infection of the genital region.
